Title
The first encounter with the king O-Aheatua 1
Short description
Georg Forster describes the first encounter with the king of Tiarraboo, O-Aheatua. Some of the travellers' gifts drew cheers of admiration from the crowd attending the meeting.
Text on source
After the first salutation, captain Cook presented Aheatua with a piece of red baize, a bed-sheet, a broad axe, a knife, nails, looking-glasses, and beads; and my father gave him similar presents, among which was an aigrette or tuft of feathers fixed on a wire, and dyed of a bright crimson; upon this his majesty set a particular value, and at the sight of it the whole croud gave a general shout of admiration, expressed by the word awhay!
