Georg Forster describes Captain Cook's ceremony of taking possession. On this occasion, several muskets were fired to the surprise of all the animals on the shore.

A volley of two or three muskets was fired into the air, to give greater weight to this assertion; and the barren rocks re-echoed with the sound, to the utter amazement of the seals and pinguins, the inhabitants of these newly discovered dominions.
