وصلناها بعد صلاة العصر فرأينا أهلها قد خرجوا لتشييع جنازة وقد أوقدوا خَلْفَها وأمامها المشاعل وأتبعوها بالمزامير والمغنيين بأنواع الأغاني المُطْرِبة فعجبنا من شأنهم [ص. ١٤١]
English translation
We arrived there after the hour of afternoon prayer, and found that its population had gone out to escort a funeral. Behind and before the bier they had lit torches, and they followed it up with oboes [mazāmīr] and singers [muġannīīn], singing all sorts of merry songs [aġānī muṭriba]. We were astonished at this behaviour of theirs.
