Girolamo Segato made a journey from Venice to Alexandria in 1818. It was Annibale De Rossetti who offered him the trip to work in the family business, but he soon became interested in archaeological ruins when he arrived in Cairo.

Observations on the travel
During this trip, he met General Rossetti, Belzoni, Frediani, Forni and Masi. He worked for Muhammad 'Ali Pasha on the construction of the Wadi-Halfa canal and joined Ismail Pasha's military campaign, for which he was appointed chancellor.
