Short description
The local governor (sulṭān) who is accompanying the travellers has the naqqāra beaten to celebrate that they received an answer to their letter from the king. The term naqqāra commonly refers to kettledrums.

وهذا الكتاب قد كان سبق من أيام إقامتنا في بيلول ورجع جوابه إلى هذا المحل المسمى عين ملي وبعد رجوع الجواب عليه أظهر المسرة العظيمة وضرب عليها بالنقارة واجتمعوا للعب الذي يعتادونه عند حصول المسر وأراد بذلك السلطان شحيم تبشيرنا وإدخال المسرة علينا وتهوين الشدة وتخفيف أثقال المخافة
English translation
This letter had already been sent ahead during the days of our stay in Baylūl, and the answer of the governor came back to this place called ʿAyna-malī. After the answer had returned to him, the sultan manifested extraordinary joy, had the naqqāra beaten because of that, and people gathered for the amusements they were accustomed to organize when happy events (al-masārr) occurred. In that way, sultan Shuḥaym wanted to bring us the good news, make us happy, ease (tahwīn) the stress and relieve the burden (athḳāl) of that fear.
