È effettivamente in tal luoco che sopra le gradazioni d'una colonna, si misura la crescenza del fiume, dopo le quali osservazioni i pubblici banditori van gridando per le strade del Cairo, le altezze successive dell'acqua ch'è il contrassegno della fertilità e abbondanza. Si crede che tale colonna ossia Nilometro sia stato fabbricato dagli Arabi.
