Giovanni Miani began his voyage on May 1, 1859, from Cairo after making arrangements to finance the expedition with French traders. The account of the trip is preceded by other notes dating from the years 1830, 1842, 1854, 1856, 1857 and 1858.

Observations on the travel
Miani's only diary that reports musical events is the first of the journey carried out between 1859 and 1860. In the 1860-61 expedition and in the one to Monbuttu (1871-72) there are no musical events.
